Amy K & The Mezzcats Featuring Cassidy Holden

April 23rd, 2022 | Category: dances

Mezz (n.): anything supreme, genuine. Ex., “this is really the mezz.”
Cat (n.): musician in swing band. (via Cab Calloway’s 1939 Hepster’s Dictionary.

Amy Kucharik first met trombonist Tim Lewandowski dancing at a Boston Swing Central dance, and the two have been friends ever since. They became musical collaborators over a decade ago and a few years ago founded the Mezzcats along with fellow dancer / pianist Michael Valdez and clarinetist Billy Novick.  Amy and her bands are known around New England for a variety of styles and tempos tailor-made for partner dancers; as Friends With Benefits they have played swing dances at Elm City Exchange and several regional dances. To make this occasion really the mezz, the band will feature BSC favorite guitarist and vocalist Cassidy Holden. These cats will play authentic 1920s and 30s swing with a few modern twists (and a few of Amy’s original tunes) for an evening that’s sure to blow your top!

Please note: must be Fully Vaccinated and Boosted to attend. And must (for the time being) wear a KN95, N95 or KF94 mask or paper surgical mask, please no cloth masks yet, they say these are somewhat worthless. We also ask that if you are attending, please try to limit attending other large events 3-4 days before attending Boston Swing Central. We are still hearing about 1 reported case of a person testing positive after each of our recent dances, so please be vigilant, and also please tell us if you do test positive.

Saturday DJ Night with DJ Javier Johnson

April 09th, 2022 | Category: dances

Boston Swing Central is excited to have DJ Javier Johnson come up from Connecticut to spin for us Saturday April 9th.

Javier Johnson is a rocket scientist by trade. He is well versed in all the swing dances, but specializes teaching in Balboa and soul. From the basics with Basie to hot jazz of Django, he’ll play almost anything as long as it’s good and has a little spice to it. And he’s found a lot of great tunes he wishes to showcase so we’re having him DJ the whole night.

We’re will also be providing another Advanced Beginner class before the dance, and before the beginner lesson. So sign up for that if you’re interested and take your dancing beyond our beginner lesson! Then stick around and angel (assist), or switch roles in our beginner lesson. Or go grab some food or drink.

We will have limited attendance capacity and will require all attendees to show proof of vaccination and to wear masks the entire time they are in the venue (including while dancing!) I >heart< Swing with the Easy Winners

February 19th, 2022 | Category: dances

Boston Swing Central is excited to return with our Valentines-themed dance featuring live music by the Easy Winners! As in previous years, this dance will feature our custom-designed Valentines and dancing Cupids to deliver them. Dress to impress in red and pink, and prepare for a night of dancing and valentines fun!

Please remember to review our COVID safety and vaccination requirements (below) to ensure that you are able to attend the dance.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED, very very small number of tickets will be available at the door, there may be additional tickets available for people arriving at around 10pm. Get there really early or late (around 10, 10:30pm).

To register in advance, visit the following page: February Dance RegistrationFacebook event here: “I <3 Swing” Dance
Note that it has been a hard month for our host dance venue, Q Ballroom, as they’re missing the revenue from our rentals in addition to an increase in rent. We will be donating all proceeds from this dance to the studio. If you are able, you can donate via BSC here: paypal.me/bostonswingcentral(Note that this may be tax-deductible, as Boston Swing Central is a 501(c)3 non-profit).

COVID Safety and Vaccination Reminders:

  1. We now require a booster shot of either Pfizer or Moderna for all dance attendees. If you have not yet received a booster or are not eligible, we will require that your last shot be within 7 months of the date of the dance you are attending (for Pfizer or Moderna), and 3 months for a single shot of J&J.
  2. We now require a KN95, N95 or KF94 mask with a better seal for all attendees. Cloth masks, gaiters, etc. will not meet our masking requirements.
  3. We request that all attendees plan accordingly before attending the dance. Out of consideration for all of our dance attendees, we ask that you plan to distance from social interaction with large crowds and unmasked individuals for 3-4 days before the dance, with a goal of avoiding inadvertent spread to our community. While we cannot enforce this, we consider it an honor system, knowing that this will allow us to continue running dances without putting our community members at greater risk.
  4. We will space our dances out to help us catch outbreaks and will notify all attendees through email, should anyone in attendance test positive for COVID. We have been doing this throughout the fall, and have been able to notify attendees in a timely manner so that they can quarantine as needed.

While these are challenging times, our hope is that this thoughtful collaboration and consideration within our dance community will allow us to continue hosting dances as we adjust to new COVID waves and restrictions.

Advanced Beginner Lesson: 7pm-8pm

February Update

February 19th, 2022 | Category: dances

We hope you’re hanging in there and we really appreciate those who have supported us through this. We are excitedly working on a Valentine’s Day dance set for February 19th. See details below.

It’s been a really hard month over at Q Ballroom, they’re missing the revenue from our rentals, and their rent went up on January 1st. We will be donating all proceeds from this dance to them. If you can and wish to help them out, donate via BSC here: paypal.me/bostonswingcentral (this may be tax-deductible, Boston Swing Central is a 501(c)3 non-profit).

We’re not quite sure what 2022 holds in store for all of us, but we continue to watch the news and we’re hopeful that this is a momentary blip. If you wish to attend the dance in the future, we will be requiring the booster, or the 2nd dose of Moderna or Pfizer be administered by July 21, 2021 or more recently. If you had a single shot of J&J, you should’ve received the shot by November 21st or later. If you have the booster, and any of these 3 types of shots, the booster suffices for right now. And of course, the dance will be masked, we recommend getting a KN95, KF94 or N95 mask, as we will not be allowing cloth masks, gaiters and surgical masks.

Dirty Water: Mona’s Hot Four+3 featuring Tamar Korn & Gordon Webster

September 27th, 2013 | Category: dances

At Boston Swing Central, we love when our universe collides and we can experience some of our favorite artists coming together to craft something similar to what we’ve heard from each of them separately, but also unique, fresh and spontaneous. That is what happens every Tuesday at Mona’s on Ave B in New York. You’ll find the core members of Mona’s Hot Four holed up for a trad jazz jam session that rivals any in the world. Musicians filter in around 11pm and queue up to get a chance to sit in with the Hot Four, with the towering names of Dennis Lichtman on clarinet, Gordon Webster on piano, Jared Engel on upright and Nick Russo on guitar.

Here they can be heard at the Jalopy theater, where they played a show in celebration of a documentary that was produced about their famed jam session:

Seriously, you don’t want to miss this intimate, improvisational and exciting performance! We’ll also be joined by some guest musicians who are dancers and regular players at Boston Swing Central to recreate the spontaneous vibe of Mona’s.

Dancing: 9:00pm – 12:30am

9:20 Special with our DJs

September 20th, 2013 | Category: dances

It’s 9/20 and what better way to celebrate this day than to have a tribute to Count Basie’s 9:20 Special. For those of you who don’t know this awesome tune…listen to it, here, off of an old 78rpm, listen carefully on earbuds and you can hear the static of the needle as it wobbles back and forth in the groove…

This tune is a true classic…so much so that it also herald’s the starting time of most of the bands at the BSC…

Tonight will be djed by RetroMike and special guest DJ Gina Helfrich
