Amy K & the Mezzcats

Category: dances

Mezz (n.): anything supreme, genuine. Ex., “this is really the mezz.”
Cat (n.): musician in swing band. (via Cab Calloway’s 1939 Hepster’s Dictionary.

This swing band is the real deal. Fronted by local vocalist, award-winning songwriter and long-time dancer Amy Kucharik, the Mezzcats feature fellow dancer/musicians Tim Lewandowski on trombone and Michael Valdez on keys. The trio met at BSC and have been playing together for more than seven years. Jazz legend Billy Novick, known for his Great Gatsby ballet and performing regionally and internationally with various jazz acts, supplies stellar woodwinds. A hummer of a rhythm section, with Pat Gaulin on drums and Nate Therrien (Portsmouth) on bass, keeps a steady swinging groove. Amy and her bands are known around New England for a variety of styles and tempos tailor-made for partner dancers; as Friends With Benefits they have played swing dances at Elm City Exchange and in Burlington, VT; Ipswich, MA; Kittery, ME and Providence, RI but this will be their Boston Swing Central debut as the Mezzcats. They focus on authentic 1930s swing with a few modern twists (and a few of Amy’s original tunes) to make an evening that will blow your top!
